wrong alias outlook.com / hotmail.com - non primary alias being used

Hi All,

Anyone having this issue?

I have a hotmail\outlook.com account that has several aliases, the primary alias, which is set correctly on the hotmail website is the one that I want to send from.

However, every time that I add the email account on my iPhone, I add the account with my primary alias email address but it changes it to a non-primary alias (the last alias I set up on that account) For example: I add acccount email myprimaryaddy@outlook.com it changes to my last added alias aliasthatisnotmyprimary@outlook.com

This used to be fine. I have tried editing the email address back to the primary but then it just reverts to the alias that is not the primary..

Maybe this happened when MS recently updated all of the Outlook.com accounts? I did not pay a lot of attention as I have more than one account set up on this iPhone

iPhone is on iOS 9.3.2

Thanks all !

iPhone 6, iOS 9.3.2, Outlook.com email

Delete the Outlook account from the iOS device

1. Log into outlook.com

2. Click on the gear icon in the upper right

3. Click on Options

4. Click on Accounts

5. Click on Connected Accounts

6. Near the bottom, there is a place to set your default "From" address

7. Pick the alias you want to use for iOS mail app.

Add the account back to the iOS device. I did a reset before adding it back, but I don't that this is necessary.

It populates correctly in the mail app.

Still annoyed there is no way to switch aliases within the iOS mail app. Maybe there will be in iOS 11.

I think I have a resolution to this one. Once I added the Hotmail account, it did switch it to the next alias in my profile. However, I received an email to that alias that although worded poorly, asked me to download Oulook for IOS. Burried within that email was a link to click that says "I want to keep using a different email client" or something like that. If you click that, Hotmail/Outlook will switch it back to your original email address, and begin populating your inbox. Hope this helps!

Yes I have this same issue. I have tried removing and adding the account back, my problem is the same as yours. I found that I had to add the account as type Other in mail setup with these settings:

Incoming (IMAP) Server

  • Server address: imap-mail.outlook.com
  • Port: 993
  • Encrypted Connection: SSL

Outgoing (SMTP) Server

  • Server address: smtp-mail.outlook.com
  • Port: 25 (or 587 if 25 is blocked)
  • Authentication: Yes
  • Encrypted Connection: TLS

User name: Your full Hotmail email address, including ‘@hotmail.com’.

Password: Your Hotmail account password

this worked (although I was asked for different information-wasn't asked for all the ports and connection info) but donly added notes and email and didn't add as calendar.

The only issue is creating new emails so I have mapped the account in the usual way so that I can at least use Calendar and reply to emails using the iPad apps. However, as a workaround, I am also using the Outlook app for new emails as this works fine with the correct alias.

Bit complicated but hopefully Apple will fix this soon.

I had exactly this problem, only realised when I replied to all and it also cc'd my main email account.😕 I have no idea how long I have been replying with the most ridiculous alias every via my iPhone. Your workaround was good but it excluded calender and other bits, and like the other user, I set up the other account just to get Calendar, but it annoyed me!

Below is what worked for me:

1. I logged into Outlook here https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/12407/microsoft-account-manage-aliases and swapped one of my aliases to my primary account (scroll down and follow instructions for 'change which account is primary') therefore making my primary account an alias, and an alias my primary account.

2. I then deleted the errant email account on my iPhone via Settings.

3. I then readded the account using my primary email address (which at that time had become an alias due to the swap noted in 1 above). Note I selected Outlook.com rather than other.

4. Test by replying to an email/writing a fresh email to ensure the correct email address is showing in the 'from' field.

5. Go back to Outlook (1 above) and re-swap the alias/primary to how it was originally.

6. Everything should be fine.

Just to note, before starting the process, I actually deleted the original alias that was being used by iPhone as I didn't really need it, but then iPhone just took the next darned alias in the list - beyond ridiculous! Then I worked out the soution above.

Hope this works for you guys. Interesting that the iPhone helps itself to your email addresses that are not actually provided to it. A bit scary tbh.

Finally, just took a quick look at Outlook on the web and although iPhone seems to have sent from the alias, it does not appear to reflect this in the online web app, so worth checking... If that's the case, the stuff above is academic!

Following my response above, my phone ran out of juice and upon restarting the error returned. My from mail is now from the genuine alias. However, I sent a test email and despite the address showing in the email as my alias address, the receipient email shows it as being from my primary email. I really have given up!
